Health Insurance Enrollment Process

The City of Boston Health Benefits and Insurance Office (directions to City Hall) will allow new employees to enroll in health insurance beginning on your effective date of employment. (For new teachers in School Year 2007-2008, September 1, 2007)

You must enroll within 60 days of date of hire. Please fill out the BPS Health Insurance Form and submit to HR. You may apply for health insurance with the City of Boston, which typically takes effect one to two months after you enroll, depending on payroll.

If you are going to be dropped from your current health insurance, bring a loss of coverage letter stating date of cancellation to the Health Benefits Office to enroll quickly. You will want to bring some form of ID, and you will need to bring a marriage certificate and birth certificates if you have a spouse and children, and would like to ensure that they are covered.

When you go to the Health Benefits Office, you should state that you are a new employee, and your name should be on a list that was sent over from BPS Office of Human Resources.

If you should experience any problems, please ask the Office of Health Benefits staff member who is working with you to contact the New Teacher Support Team or the Office of Human Resources Staffing Team Member.
