School Support Positions

Thank you for your interest in the Boston Public Schools. These school support positions support teaching and learning in all of our schools.

Boston Public Schools posts vacant school-based and central office positions on the BPS Career Center. Candidates must create an online profile and either attach or build a resume. After completing the online application, you may then apply for each posiition in which you are interested.

Paraprofessional

Paraprofessionals are an incredible resource at Boston Public Schools, working directly with students of all abilities to support teaching. Classroom Paraprofessionals, Community Field Coordinators, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTA), Surround Care, Security, Library, and Health Paraprofessionals, and Instructional Assistant Trainees all help to support teaching and learning within our schools, and are eligible to receive:

  • A clear path to becoming a full time certified Teacher

Requirements

To be a Paraprofessional, you must:

  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED
  • Possess at least 48 credit hours of advanced course work, or a college degree (Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or other graduate work)
  • If you do not have 48 credit hours, you must pass one of the following:

Temporary Clerical

Temporary clerical personnel support schools through organization, communication, and other duties assigned.

Requirements

To be considered, you must:

  • Pass a typing test of at least 45 words per minute, administered by the Office of Human Resources
  • Live in the City of Boston
    Some positions require City of Boston residency. Candidates not living in the City of Boston would be required to relocate to Boston before accepting.

Base Salary: $452.00-$501.25 weekly**


Facilities Personnel

Temporary custodians, storekeepers, and delivery personnel are responsible for the stocking, maintenance, upkeep, and environmental safety of our schools.

Requirements

To be considered, you must:

  • Apply to the Temporary Custodian position
  • Live in the City of Boston
    Some positions require City of Boston residency. Candidates not living in the City of Boston would be required to relocate to Boston before accepting.

Lunch Hour Monitors

Lunch Hour Monitors relieve teachers during scheduled lunch periods, supervise students during lunch periods and perform ordinary school tasks during their full work period. After applying for a Lunch Monitor position, by following the application procedures above, qualified candidates will be interviewed by the School Principal or designee.

Requirements

To be considered, you must:

Base Salary: $10.10 per hour**


Temporary Cafeteria Workers

Temporary Cafeteria workers assist in preparing and serving food to students and adults and in the sanitary maintenance of the cafeteria and kitchen. After applying for a Temporary Cafeteria Worker position, by following the application procedures above, qualified candidates will be interviewed by the Office of Food Services.

Requirements

To be considered, you must:

Base Salary: $8.00 per hour (for temporary entry level assignments)

Bus Monitors

Bus Monitors are responsible for the general supervision of all students on our transportation vehicles.

Regular Transportation Attendants

Regular bus monitors are needed at schools on an on-going basis, but each school may or may not have a need at any given time.

Special Education Transportation Attendants (SPED Cab Monitors)

Base Salary: $17.14 per run


School Police Officers

School Police Officers perform the duties under the general guidelines of the Boston City Police at school sites throughout the City.

Requirements

To be considered, you must:

  • Provide a copy of a High School Diploma or G.E.D., or documentation for a higher degree. Be a U.S Citizen and at least 21 years of age.
  • Provide documentation with a passing score on the Boston Police, Rule number 400, Special Officers exam prior to date of hire.
  • Posses a valid Massachusetts Driver's license (copy must be submitted)
  • Live in the City of Boston
    Some positions require City of Boston residency. Candidates not living in the City of Boston would be required to relocate to Boston before accepting.
  • Pass an extensive medical examination at their own expense prior to date of hire.
  • Pass a physical fitness standards test prior to date of hire.

Base salary: $13.16 - $15.41 per hour/40 hour work week


School Nurses

School nurses identify, evaluate and participate in correcting physical, instructional, emotional, perceptual and developmental problems that interfere with learning in order to help students reach their full potential.

After applying for a School Nurse position, by following the application procedures above, qualified candidates will be interviewed by the Office of Human Resources or the School Principal/Headmaster.

Requirements

To be considered, you must:

  • Possess a minimum Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
  • Possess a current registered nurse license and MA Dept of Education School Nurse License

Guidance Counselor

The Guidance Counselor, through the process of individual and group counseling, helps students to understand their aptitudes, capabilities, and limitations in making personal decisions, educational plans and occupational choices.

Requirements

To be considered, you must:

  • Possess a Master's Degree in education, counseling or other related fields
  • Possess a current MA Dept of Education Guidance Counselor License
