Showcase In Our Schools - visit all schools grades K-8
November marks the beginning of our School Choice season, when the Boston Public Schools invites families to tour schools, talk with principals and school staff, meet other parents and incoming students and ask about our student enrichment opportunities -- all to help families choose the schools that best fit their needs. Families entering Kindergarten, 6th or 9th grade next year can register for schools beginning in January.
This year brings a new and exciting decentralized format to the annual Showcase of Schools, for K-8, that aligns with the new Home-Based school choice plan, set to begin for the 2014-15 school year. The Home-Based plan eliminates the three large zones that had been in place since 1988 and takes school quality into account to develop customized lists for every family. The plan is expected to cut the average distance children travel to school by 40 percent, increase the chances a family will receive one of their top choices, and increase equitable access to quality schools overall.
In previous school choice seasons, principals, teachers and other staff members from early education centers, elementary schools, K-8 and middle schools gathered at one location, where families faced as many as 30 school choices across wide geographic zones, represented only by kiosks and flyers. This year we are launching Showcase In Our Schools - and all schools serving grades K0-8 will open their doors for parent visits on November 16 from 9 AM to 1 PM. This structure allows families to explore a few schools more deeply in one day, followed by additional viewing opportunities in the weeks ahead.
At the high school level, where all schools are citywide options, the Showcase of Schools format remains the same as in the past. Principals, teachers and staff from high schools will gather under one roof, at Madison Park High School, on December 5 from 6-8 PM to answer questions from parents and students.
In addition to those Showcase opportunities, BPS also offers four School Preview Days for all grades, K-12. These are additional opportunities for parents to visit any BPS school and meet with school leaders and staff:
- Tuesday, December 3, 5:30-7:00pm
- Wednesday, December 11, 10-11:30am
- Thursday, December 19, 7:00-8:30am
- Tuesday, January 7, 10:00-11:30am
BPS will also host more than two dozen information sessions across the city starting Nov. 4, to help families and community partners learn more about the Home-Based school choice plan works. To find an Information Session near you, please click here.
Incoming families can learn about their choices for next year using a redesigned DiscoverBPS website, www.discoverbps.org, in early November. The re-launched site will display a family’s school choices in a user-friendly format based on their location and grade. It will also features a sortable list of school options to help families more easily decide which schools are right for them.
